The anti-Islam movie trailer that allegedly inspired the riots in Egypt and Libya comes across as a Monty Python charade.
Surely these actors and writers were making a farce not a work of art. Bad acting, horrible dialogue, absurd sets… it's so bad it becomes comical.
How could such tripe cause the death of 4 Americans?
One answer is that religious zealots don't have a sense of humor. True during the Catholic Inquisition, for sure.
A second answer is that religious zealots over-react to any slight, no matter how irrelevant. See my post here about Christian fundamentalists who go nuts about keeping God on money.
A third answer is that religious fundamentalism has little to do with these riots. Religion is a smoke-screen to cover-up the blatant grab for influence and power in a region without order. Nature abhors a vacuum.
I find it hard to believe that a spontaneous riot overcame the armed guards at the State Department compound. The mob just happened to have machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades!
They just happened to attack on September 11. Coincidence? No. The movie circulated for months. Its sudden surge was an excuse to camoflouge a premeditated attack.
